FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) - City and county road crews have been working around the clock clearing off major highways, roadways, even making it into residential neighborhoods late Thursday. As work continues in those areas, one thing crews are beginning to notice as a problem are alley ways which have not been plowed.

No need to worry, the city has a solution.

Fort Wayne has hired contractors to use front loaders to clear the alleys making it easier for garbage trucks to get through on their scheduled routes.

Frank Suarez with City Utilities and Public Works explains that the motivation to do something is out of necessity.

"We had a number of trash collection trucks and recycling trucks that got stuck in alleys in the last couple of days, so we are trying to make those a little bit more passable, clear that snow - remove it from the street but not from the area - to get it pushed aside so they can get through to collect that garbage and recycling."

Another problem facing the city is where to put all the snow that has been plowed from the streets. Plow crews have been tasked with clearing roads with almost nowhere to put the snow.

Suarez says the city will continue to clear snow off the streets with the anticipation that growing snow mounds will soon begin to melt.
