FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) – Community leaders were joined today by the artistic director for the Voices of Unity Youth Choir as his students prepare for two major performances.
It was all part of the kick-off celebrations of the city's "Gold for the City" campaign, which started Thursday at Sweetwater Sound. The campaign is intended to build pride, awareness, and support for the accomplishments the choir as they bring positive attention to Fort Wayne.
During Thursday’s festivities, the owner and founder of Sweetwater Sound, Chuck Surack, made a donation of $50,000 to help fund the choir's upcoming trips to Carnegie Hall in June 2014 and Latvia next July for the World Choir Games.
"That is just unbelievable, it's overwhelming and I just shake my head and I thank God for those people when I know there are many more out there in this community that can help because the positive climate needs the same investment as the negative climate is getting. And when negative climate is fed, what happens? It grows. So the same happens when a positive climate is fed and fueled - it grows."
The choir is hoping to raise $385,000 to allow both trips to happen.
