FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) - Being stuck indoors for an extended period of time can make you feel like you are going to go crazy. No need to worry though, you are not alone.
Snow days are fun for a day or two, but when you are talking about day after day you quickly run out of ideas of what to do with yourself.
It is called "cabin fever," and social experts say it is very common this time of year. They recommend changing your daily routine or lifestyle. Some examples include picking up a new hobby, or mixing up your workout routine.
Since running outdoors is virtually impossible with the negative temperatures, adding in weights may be a possibility.
Sometimes it is not about what you should do, but rather what you should not be doing.
"Don't drink alcohol," says psychiatrist Dr. Jay Fawver. "I was watching a report from Russia this morning on how much vodka is consumed over there. They drink a tremendous amount of vodka. And if you drink alcohol in the winter time it makes you feel worse. So I say, 'OK avoid alcohol if you could do so in the wintertime.'"
Experts often relate cabin fever and seasonal affective disorder and say both can be treated in similar ways.
