HOAGLAND, Ind. (NBC33) – Emma Melcher is an amazing woman. Despite being 104 years old, she is sharp as a tack. She still does all of her own laundry, dishes and cooks most of her own meals.
Born to a German farming family, hers was the first family in Indiana to mass-produce soy beans.
In spending time with her Friday afternoon, she shared countless stories of what it was like growing up in Illinois and Indiana, getting married during the Great Depression, and how she worked at Macy's until the age of 99, never missing a day of work.
Her advice to staying active and feeling young at 104?
"Keep busy. Keep busy if you can. You have to accomplish something and keep busy, otherwise, well, what did you do that day? Nothing? Well that don't bring you nothing. You gotta keep busy."
Melcher also says eating breakfast is the single most important part of her day.
