FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) - On Thursday, Mayor Tom Henry was joined by families of 17 deployed service members to unveil the newest set of Blue Star Banners.
These 17 banners will join the 14 already flying on Jefferson Blvd. as residents and visitors enter the downtown area. Each banner represents a deployed military member that is currently serving in one of the five branches of the military.
The Blue Star Banners is an initiative that began as a way for the city of Fort Wayne to honor and thank those who serve and protect our country every day.
"Well, walking in the room his name is actually the first one that I actually saw," said Beth Metz, the mother of a PFC Brandon Parrish, who is currently deployed with the Navy. "So being able to drive down Jefferson and see it, it's just going to be an honor for our entire family. We're all extremely, extremely proud of him."
To nominate a friend or family member to be included in the next Blue Star Banner ceremony, contact the city to get more information on how to apply.
