FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - It's back to school time, and this can be a tough, stressful time for the kids. Jason Meyers and Parkview Health talk about how to best prepare your kids for the school year. Kids are heading back to school. This can be a big change and an exciting time for a child going to Elementary school for the first time. Dr. Beale - "It's a real kind of white flag when you see a kid who's apprehensive about going to school or is already saying they don't like school. Because these young guys are going to approach school like a toddler approaches the world, and that's full of wonder and enthusiasm." If you child is hesitant, it's best to talk it over with them... let them see the school... meet the teacher. This should put them more at ease. Heading to middle school isn't as easy. Dr. Beale - "Not only do they have to take more responsibility and be more organized in going to classes and face a heavier work load, they have a much more complicated social system to master. And this will be the beginning for a lot of kids of their self-esteem or their view of how well they relate to kids and how much kids like them." As a parent, the Doctor says to make sure you help your child build a healthy self-esteem. And heading into high school can be another tough transition... Dr. Beale - "One of the things that I'm often recommending to my young people is that they get involved in some activity at school. You make friends, you do something good, you develop some kind of talent or interest, and it really does a lot to support those kinds of things that a lot of kids worry are not going to go well." Going to college may be another tough transition, but this time it may be the child and the parent having trouble adapting. Doctor Beale says schedule a time you'll talk each week to help ease the change. Keeping an eye on the weather and your health, I'm Jason Meyers.
