What Is Market Basket?

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Here at Indiana’s NewsCenter, we’re looking for ways to keep a few extra bucks in your pocket when you’re heading to the grocery store.

We’ve highlighted twelve items, staples for families, which fill cupboards and refrigerators to keep your family full and satisfied. As the price of oil continues to rise, so will the cost of the food you want to purchase. What you pay for your items tonight might cost a little more next week and we’re going to keep track of those items for you.

The Items:
One Loaf of White Bread
One Dozen, Grade A Large Eggs
One Gallon of 2% Milk
One Pound of American Cheese
One Pound of Chocolate
One Pound of Ground Coffee
One Pound of Granulated Sugar
One Pound of White Rice
One Pound of Fresh Tomatoes
One Pound of Fresh Oranges
One Pound of Fresh Chicken Breast
One Pound of Fresh Ground Beef

Smart shopping is about planning ahead according to Vickie Hadley with the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service. She says, “We'll have things that will get pushed to the back of refrigerators and we end up with our own science lab after a period of time. We also end up with products that'll get pushed back in the cupboards and so things will become outdated. And so the key thing is we need to pay attention to what do we already have at home? What can we incorporate? And then take a look. What are ads and how can we incorporate those items that are on sale in planning our menus for the week?”

In addition to having a list with items that you need, Hadley says to have an idea of what your menu will be for the week. If you buy items specific to your menu ideas, you won’t over-purchase. Hadley also says to make sure you go to the grocery store with a full stomach. If you go on empty, foods not on your list, especially processed and canned foods, will take precedents over what you really need.
