Decatur, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)-It’s been a year since we last profiled Decatur and much has happened since, improvements downtown, progress on the business and jobs front and much more. But the most significant change here isn’t in brick and mortar or job creation…it’s something best represented by this man. Curtis Rose is a Decatur sculptor who specializes in pieces modeled after the Mobius band, a three dimensional optical illusion. Rose is among eight artists whose sculptures will be featured on the first ever Decatur sculpture walk next month…eight sculptures located at various points downtown.

“And the intent is to have people come to Decatur,” says Decatur mayor John Schultz, “to see them we want to be a destination point for the arts.”

And Decatur’s the perfect candidate for an art destination point. It’s the hometown of perhaps America’s greatest modern sculptor, David Smith, born and raised in Decatur Indiana before skipping off to New York City to make his fortune as a world class artist. He’d be very pleased at the turn of events in his hometown.

“And hopefully it develops a little bit more every year,” says Mayor Schultz, “starting out with eight outside, well, next year maybe we’ll have ten or twelve. We’re looking at the quality of life in Decatur, we want to make the quality of life in Decatur the best it possibly can through the arts, through the schools through the library through the churches, everything.”
