BERNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)-IT’S BEEN A GOOD YEAR FOR BERNE, PROGRESS ON THE LOCAL ECONOMY, PROGRESS ON THE JOBS FRONT. BUT THE BIG NEWS IN THIS SMALL TOWN IS UNCHANGED FROM LAST YEAR….

David: This is a gathering space for the people of Berne.

BERNE’S MUENSTERBERG CLOCK TOWER IS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, ITS GRAND ARCHITECTURE, THE GORGEOUS GARDENS…AND NEWEST OF ALL, THE SPLASH PAD. THIS ENTIRE PROJECT, THE CLOCKTOWER PLAZA, WAS CONCEIVED BY VOLUNTEERS, PAID FOR BY VOLUNTEERS AND IS MAINTAINED BY VOLUNTEERS.

David: We have 3000 flowers, 3000 annual flowers here all maintained by volunteers. The people who mow this lawn all do it voluntarily they bring their own mowers, they bring their own gas.

WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CLOCKTOWER AND PLAZA THE FOLKS OF BERNE HAVE BUILT A TOWN SQUARE, A TOWN GATHERING PLACE FOR CONCERTS, OUTDOOR MOVIES AND EVENTS…AND AS EXPECTED IT’S ONE HECK OF A GREAT TOURIST ATTRACTION.

David: When you think of Berne you think of this people in Indy, people around the state when they think of Berne say ‘that place with that tower’.

BERNE HAS LONG TRADED ON ITS SWISS HERITAGE, EVIDENT HERE IN THE PLAZA BY THE SETTLERS STATUE HONORING BERNE’S FOUNDERS. BUT WITH THE CLOCKTOWER MODELED AFTER THE MEDIEVAL MEUNSTERBERG TOWER IN BERNE, SWITZERLAND…BERNE INDIANA HAS EMBRACED THAT HERITAGE FULLY, AND STAKED THEIR ECONOMIC FUTURE ON THE DEVELOPMENT IT WILL BRING. IT’S A BOLD AND CREATIVE STATEMENT BY THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THIS TOWN…AND A PRIME REASON WHY LIFE IS BETTER HERE AND WILL LIKELY BE BETTER FOR SOME TIME TO COME.
