Despite progress in smoking, high cholesterol and high blood pressure rates...obesity and diabetes are still on the rise, according to the most up-to-date statistics from the AHA.
In the new issue of the journal Circulation, researchers report that between 1999 and 2009, the rate of deaths from cardiovascular disease fell nearly 33-percent, but still accounted for one in three deaths... That's more than 2,150 people dying each day.
Looking at the risk factors, the data show 68.2 percent of adults are overweight or obese- and 33 percent engage in no aerobic activity. More than 8 percent have diagnosed diabetes and more than 38 percent have pre-diabetes.
In 2010, the American Heart Association set a goal to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent-and reduce heart disease and stroke deaths by 20 percent all by the year 2020.
