Prescription Drug Problem
Story Updated: Apr 24, 2013
Some sobering findings today about our kids and prescription drug use. The Partnership at Drugfree-dot-org is out with some new survey results...and they're daunting.
One in four teens admit they've misused or abused some form of prescription drug at least once...that's a 33-percent increase over the last 5 years.
One in every eight teens confess to taking a friend's ADHD-medication at least once. That's about 2.7 million kids! 26-percent believe these stimulant drugs can be used as a study aid.
What's even more shocking, almost one in four teens say their parents don't care as much if they are caught using prescription drugs, compared to getting caught with illegal drugs.
42-percent who have misused or abused a prescription drug say they got it out of their parents' medicine cabinet.
Some relatively positive points? Teen abuse of prescription pain relievers like Vicodin and OxyContin has remained stable since 2011. As has use of cocaine, methamphetamines, steroids, inhalants and cigarette smoking.
Experts say parents tend to fear cocaine and heroin, when prescription medications can be every bit as harmful and potentially deadly.
