If you're running your kids to spring sports practice today, here's some good news! Overall sports injuries in kids are down more than 11-percent in the past decade, according to a new study. The researchers tracked injuries to children 5 to 14 years of age using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System. They included eight different athletic activities and data from three specific years --2000, 2005 and 2010.

The eight activities were:





-roller sports, which includes everything from inline skates to scooters

-playground equipment

-and trampolines.

Decreases in overall injuries were found in both 2005 and 2010. The most improvement came in the bike, roller sport and trampoline categories. The researchers believe it may be due to good injury prevention programs aimed at these specific activities. Despite improvements...certain organized sports still bucked the trend- including football where injuries were up 22.8% and soccer up 10.8%. The hope is that continued understanding of trends in pediatric sports and recreational injuries can help future injury prevention efforts.
