All Things in Moderation

Her wisdom was extraordinary, considering her formal education did not go beyond the eighth grade. However, what she lacked in academia, she benefited from her 101 years of REAL life experiences. And, she was more than willing to share her point of view with the entire Trok clan, even when we were not receptive to her advice.
It took many years for her common sense approach to living to finally take hold--such remarks as: ‘ignorance is bliss,’ ‘you kids just don’t know,’ and ‘all things in moderation,’ mostly seemed to annoy me. Now, in retrospect, her urgings make perfect sense (must be an age thing or should I claim to some form of maturity) and I catch myself repeating these wisdom’s to all who will listen, as well as to my children. (Ha! Ha!)
This leads me to the point of this story. Years ago I attended a seminar entitled “How to Live to Be One Hundred.” In his presentation, David Meinz talked about the seven characteristics of a centenarian (someone living to the age of one hundred). Two of those characteristics are worthy of mentioning--#5-Nutrition & #7-Moderation.
David explained that a major university study examined hundreds of REAL diet surveys so as to discover the eating habits of this remarkable group of senior citizens. And, what they found should be no surprise. Almost ever one of the people surveyed demonstrated a well-balanced, nutritional diet. Additionally, the survey showed that these centenarians practiced (eating all things in) moderation. Unlike most of us that over-indulge (filling our plates to over-flowing and often times loading the plate a second time), these Great Depression survivors controlled their insatiable appetites with common sense and good judgment.
‘All Things in Moderation’—good advice from a wise lady then and good advice for all of us now.
