FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- A young girl was shot in the leg on Fort Wayne's southeast side Tuesday night.

Police say it happened just after 10 p.m. in the 2900 block of S. Hanna St. Initially, the mother of the 3-year-old told police that she was putting her children (the girl and 1-year-old twins) in a car in the alley when she heard a shot and the girl began to cry.

During the investigation, police located a man at the residence who was crying and saying he was the girl's father (he later told police she was his niece). Police say his comments were not consistent with the mother's comments of the evidence at the scene.

With permission of the residents, police say they searched the home and found a gun on roof that had access from a door on the second story.

According to police, the man was taken to the police station to be questioned. During questioning, the man told police that he had purchased the gun about a week ago to protect his family and that it had been sitting on the table and just went off.

Police informed him that some action is required to make the gun go off. He began to cry and said that he left it on the table and had gone downstairs and when he returned the 3-year-old had the gun and dropped it and it went off, causing the injury to her leg.

She was last listed in fair condition.

No arrests have been made.
