FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – The Oliver St. homicide happened just a couple hours before Fort Wayne's City Council took a preliminary, but unanimous, vote to promote Police Chief Rusty York to the position of Public Safety Director.

So what does he think he can do in this new job to help curb the city's violent crime rate? As we all realize, there's no magic wand to be waved to stop people from killing each other.

And perhaps no one knows that better than Chief York. After 14-years as police chief, York says his officers have developed better relationships and ties with people in the southeast quadrant of the city, especially within the faith community.

He admits while his replacement will most likely come from his current command staff, that the new chief will bring a fresh set of eyes to the position, which he appreciates. He says no one has the absolute answer for how to stem the killings.

“There's nothing, no one thing I can tell you that is going to make a difference,” York said. “I think it's a number of things. There's going to be some things that the police department can do, there's going to be things that the community is going to have to do, and it's going to have to drill down to parents.”

York will oversee police, fire, emergency dispatch and animal care and control, and serve as a mentor to the heads of those departments. He'll also be able to develop a "big picture" strategic plan, and look for other revenue streams or grants to help add firefighters and police officers.

York will be sworn in as the city's public safety director at the first of the year, as will his replacement, who should be named within the next two weeks.
