INDIANA, (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock pulled off an historic victory Tuesday night, trouncing long-time U.S.Senator Richard Lugar in the GOP Primary Election.
Mourdock garnered more than 60 percent of the vote to beat Lugar in a breeze.
It's a result that makes supporters of the conservative Tea Party Movement absolutely giddy.
A year ago, it seemed like a long shot that Mourdock could knock off the six-term senator.
He wound up leaving Lugar in the dust.
Richard Mourdock/(R) Senate Nominee: " ...To conservatives and others around the country... wondering if they could do the impossible. My friends, tonight you demonstrated it is possible."
Jeff Neumeyer: " At Lugar's Election night headquarters on the northside of Indianapolis, the outcome was a bitter pill to swallow for the senator's supporters. The margin of defeat was particularly hard to fathom."
Lugar arrived to applause before delivering his concession speech.
He had words of praise for Mourdock and for the volunteers who worked hard trying to help the senator secure the party nomination.
U.S. Senator Richard Lugar/(R) Indiana: " I hope that Richard Mourdock prevails in November, so we can contribute to that Republican majority in the Senate. The task before us is to come together as Americans, to sustain the American dream."
A lof of out of state money financed attack ads against the senator.
They portrayed Lugar as too moderate and out of touch with Indiana and its voters.
John Mutz/Former Lt. Governor: " I am shocked. This man does not deserve that kind of a tally. But then again, nobody said the world was fair."
The state Democratic Party seemed to be celebrating right along with the Mourdock campaign.
Democrats boasted that the Mourdock-Joe Donnelly contest in November looks like a toss up.
They added that Hoosiers who've voted for Lugar all their lives will reject a Tea Party candidate like Mourdock.
