FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Synthetic cannabinoids, known on the streets as K2 and Spice, will be illegal to sell and use in Fort Wayne on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, Indiana's NewsCenter has learned the ban will not stop one local business owner from preparing to sell the marijuana-like substance outside of Fort Wayne and Allen County.

"I'm searching out in this other community," said On The Side Convenience Store Owner Chad Elder.

Elder's "On The Side" convenience store, is located on Sinclair Street in Northwest Fort Wayne.

The business opened in 2009 and Elder said synthetic cannabinoid spice sales are the only reason he is still in business.

Elder said he went before the Fort Wayne City Council in mid-August to express his support for regulating the substance sale and usage to people 18 and up.

Elder said he has earned $75,000 dollars in the past five months but he does not want to break any laws, so he will stop selling Spice in Fort Wayne on Monday.

Meanwhile, Elder is preparing to continue legally selling spice.

"You know the way I see it, their kinda welcoming me in open arms 'cause that's tax dollars coming into their community," said Elder.

Elder said he has already paid a down payment on his new location and assured Indiana's NewsCenter that it will be located somewhere that selling K2 and Spice is still legal.

Elder did not share the exact location with Indiana's NewsCenter but said it will be located about 15 to 20 minutes west of Allen County.

Elder said he wishes the tax revenues that he earns from selling spice could stay in Fort Wayne, but said moving outside of Allen County makes sense.

"I gotta take care of the family, I gotta you know, prepare for the future and you know that's why we spent all morning today outside of Fort Wayne shopping around," said Elder.
