Fort Wayne, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - As Fort Wayne Police continue to search for the attacker responsible for the brutal sexual assault on the Rivergreenway, many may wondering what happens after an assault.

Just like all cases, forensic evidence must be gathered. Sexual assault cases are brought to the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center.

While it’s not mandatory that victims report sexual abuse, the center has seen an increase this year in reported cases.

The DNA samples collected at the center make a tremendous difference when it comes to solving the crimes.

Leslie Cook with the FWSATC says, “We’ll collect all the important fibers that we may see. We’ll photograph any bruises that the patient doesn’t recall getting and make good documentation of it all.”

While the law determines what constitutes a rape versus sexual assault, the treatment center investigates every case the same.
