FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Armed Robberies. They seem to be more and more common this winter, but is Fort Wayne alone? Not according to the US crime statistics from 2012.
It shows the violent crime rate, which includes armed robberies, rose an astounding 17 percent - bucking a decrease in that statistic previously saw over the past 20 years.
Given that, a rise in fort wayne may seem understandable, but according to Police Chief Rusty York, it’s actually much worse than that.
"Armed robbery is always a serious situation,” York says, “but we've noticed an increase of 2012 over 2011 of almost 40 percent. So more people are involving themselves in these crimes."
Just yesterday footage surfaced on INC from the armed robbery of a grocery store on Decatur Road which involved four suspects with guns. Shots were even fired inside the shop.
York says this is a major concern of the Fort Wayne police, and several arrests have been made.
Whether it be the bank robberies we saw towards the end of 2012 or the recent apartment robberies, he says this is something they are focusing on constantly.
