PAULDING, Ohio (www.incnow.tv) – Clean up efforts continue along U.S. 24 following a multi-vehicle accident early Tuesday morning near Paulding, Ohio. According to officials with county’s Emergency Management Agency Homeland Security, it could still be a while.

EMA Director Randy Shaffer explained when dealing with an accident like this, a number of precautions have to be taken. Their first responsibility is to secure the safety of human life. From there they begin putting dams in place around ditches to prevent the fuel and other harmful chemicals from seeping into the water supply.

"I'm expecting probably two more weeks of clean-up along the ditches going to the place where we had the dam set up near county road 206,” Shaffer says, “all that contaminated soil will have to be scooped and removed and replaced with new soil that's not contaminated."

In all, over 1,600 gallons of ethanol and 800 gallons of diesel fuel spilled following the accident.

Despite being in charge of overseeing the clean-up on U.S. 24, the EMA is not the ones responsible for the physical clean up of the mess. As Shaffer explained, it is the financial responsibility of the person who last had control of the product prior to the accident. Even though they may not be the one who is ultimately liable for the spill, it is their job to cover the initial clean-up.

Once the spill is taken care of, recovery efforts can be made to decide who is truly at-fault. At that point it is in the hands of the courts.
