FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- It may come as no surprise, but the top complaint registered with the Indiana Attorney General's office in 2013 was dealing with used car sales and service.
Greg Zoeller says that's not unusual, but it's a disheartening trend.
His office responds to thousands of consumer complaints every year, ranging from scams to poor Internet or TV providers to identity theft to retail sales.
Zoeller says his staff members often mediate between the consumer and business, to try to reach a resolution.
“We work with the Better Business Bureau and others. But we also, if you've got a warranty, if you've got things that are legal requirements that we can put additional pressure to perform,” Zoeller says.
The top consumer complaint categories are:
1. Used auto sales and service
2. Retail sales
3. Home repair and construction
4. Debt collection
5. Fraud and scams
6. Internet sales and service
7. Consumer lending
8. Identity theft
9. Health services (like gym memberships)
10. Telephone and TV service providers
