FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Moving crews began taking tables, chairs, cabinets and other storage units from the City-County Building to Citizens Square today.
Today marks what will be more than a month of moving as 40 departments from the City of Fort Wayne and Allen County combine. Seven departments kicked off the move today: Information Technology Office, Property Management Office, Controllers’ Office, Internal Audit Office, Two Community Liaisons and the Risk Management Office.
City of Fort Wayne and Allen County departments were once spread over nine floors at the City-County Building. The move to Citizens Square will consolidate departments and space over just four floors. Once open to the public, tours will be available and greeters will be stationed at the entrance to Citizens Square to help residents find the departments they need.
The move is to be completed by the end of May. Mayor Tom Henry and his staff will be the last to move to the newly refurbished building. The Mayor calls the move a group effort. Today he said, “The business community came out, the neighborhood associations came out, partnerships came out and they all said this is what they wanted. They supported us all along. It was a long, lengthy process. It took a lot of patience, a lot of perseverance, but by the end of May it will be done and we'll be saying thank you to the citizens of Fort Wayne.”
The City-County building will be transformed into the public safety hub for the City of Fort Wayne and Allen County. Fort Wayne Police and Fire Department administrations will be stationed there along with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department and the newly combined 911 center.
Residents with concerns can call 3-1-1 if they have trouble finding departments in the new building. To see the moving schedule, a map of Citizens Square and for a closer look at where city and county departments will operate, click the link “Moving to Citizens Square.”
