FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – A man is in police custody after leading authorities on a pursuit.

Fort Wayne police identified the suspect as Henry Purifoy III, 23, of Fort Wayne.

Around 4:57 p.m. Sunday, members of the Gang and Violent Crimes Unit attempted to pull over a car for speeding near Anthony and Drexel.

As police tried to initiate the traffic stop, Purifoy sped off and led police on a short pursuit. Police say Purifoy led police down Warsaw Street, past Pontiac Street, and back up Hanna Street.

Police say Purifoy was the only one in the car, and the pursuit lasted approximately six minutes.

During the chase, police say Purifoy threw a semi-automatic handgun out of the driver side window. Police confiscated the handgun.

Then, near the intersection of Hanna and Lasselle Streets, police say Purifoy jumped out of the moving vehicle and began running.

With the help of K-9 Jax, police say they were able to capture Purifoy in the parking lot of Chapel Oak Apartments at the intersection of Buchanan Street and Greentree Court.

Police say Purifoy is in custody and is facing five felony charges and two misdemeanors, including possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, possession of a handgun without a permit, resisting law enforcement in a vehicle, possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana, resisting on foot, and criminal trespassing.
