FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Four post office employees are safe, and two suspects are still on the loose after a hold-up at the Diplomat Post Office Wednesday afternoon.
Fort Wayne police are currently investigating the events leading up to an armed robbery and hostage situation at the U.S. Post Office located in the 4100 block of Hessen Cassel, near the intersection of McKinnie Ave.
Police say the suspects are still at-large, and they are not sure how long the suspects were in the post office or when they managed to escape. The only description police have at this point is the suspects were wearing masks. Police are interviewing the post office employees and customers and the incident is still under investigation.
Around 3:30 Wednesday afternoon a post office employee alerted police that two men wearing masks and holding weapons entered the post office. Police say two customers were inside at the time, but managed to get away safely. However, four post office employees were still inside. Police say they were able to keep in contact with one of the employees inside who told them they were hiding in a safe place within the building, but they weren’t sure if the suspects were still inside.
From there, FWPD treated the incident like a hostage situation and called their Emergency Services Team (EST) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) to diffuse the situation. EST entered the post office just before 6 p.m. and managed to get the employees out to safety.
“Once we rescued the four employees, our Emergency Services Team went back inside and they cleared the facility. What that means is that they searched each room, they searched every location inside the facility to make sure that our suspects were still not in there hiding,” said Raquel Foster, FWPD Public Information Officer.
Police believe the suspects robbed the post office, but bystanders at the scene say the suspects robbed a nearby gas station and hid in the post office. Police are interviewing post office employees and customers, and investigating what led to the hostage situation.
