FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- We now know the police are investigating former Bishop Luers football coach Matt Lindsay, and the criminal investigation may involve children.

An unimpeachable source tells us a law enforcement agency joined the investigation Monday morning.

But a spokesman for that department says he cannot confirm that an investigation into Coach Lindsay has begun.

Bishop Rhoades was in South Bend Wednesday and unavailable for comment.

We were told by the diocese late in the morning that a statement about Coach Lindsay might be released Wednesday afternoon, but we were told later that would not happen.

A spokesman for the diocese tell us Bishop Rhoades is very aware of the need to be transparent with this situation, and added that more information may be released soon.

We do know that administrators at Bishop Luers and the diocese contacted police Friday afternoon, the day after Lindsay was put on administrative leave.

He was fired Sunday for what the Bishop Luers principal called "violations of school and diocesan policies, and his violations of his employment contract obligations."

Any parent is going to wonder if their child has been exposed to anything or involved in anything related to this investigation.

And while we do not know the specifics of the criminal investigation, we asked if we could reassure parents that it did not involve children.

We were told "no" by the source who confirmed the investigation.

We will bring you more as this situation continues to unfold.
