FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Traffic at exit 116, the Dupont Road exit, has been a nightmare for many drivers lately. The road expansion on Dupont often has north bound traffic backed up all the way down Interstate 69 past the 469 interchange. That means traffic getting off at exit 115 for I-469 must cross stopped, or slow, traffic. That's dangerous for the cars stopped and for those trying to exit.
We called the Indiana Department of Transportation to see what was being done about the problem. INDOT officials said they knew about the problem and had a plan already in place, but thanks in part to our call, they decided to go ahead with a possible solution.... today.
"What we ended up doing, actually just today, is we have changed some of the traffic signal timing on Dupont Road so there is what you call more green time. Which basically just means more green lights to help with the back-ups," says Stacie McCormick, Public Information Director for INDOT. McCormick says INDOT hopes this will help clear up the traffic delays coming off of interstate 69.
However, there could be negative consequences as well. "What could end up happening in this situation is there might be more of a backup on Parkview Plaza. And no one likes traffic back-ups, but it is much more safe for there to be backed up on Parkview Plaza than on I-69."
Sgt. Ron Galaviz is with the Indiana State Police. He says it's important for drivers caught in this slowed or stopped traffic to take their time, allow additional time for travel, be patient, look for construction workers, and watch for other vehicles that may be slowing down or stopping.
"Any time you have stopped traffic you're running the risk of having a few fender benders here and there and that's something that we're trying to alleviate the very best that we can," says Galaviz. "So, we ask for the public's help, because hopefully we can make these roads safer together."
INDOT officials, and Indiana's NewsCenter, will be keeping their eyes open over the next few days to see if the traffic signal change has helped with traffic congestion.
Road construction on Dupont is expected to wrap up by the end of construction season later this year, but officials say it could be next spring before they are completely finished.
