Snow Covered Sidewalks Making For Treacherous Steps

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21ALIVE) --- With snow piled up along streets here in Fort Wayne, getting around town on foot is no task for the faint of heart.

Indeed, “hoofing it” in the winter of 2014 can involve some perilous steps.

The sune was shining Tuesday, with temperatures close to 40, a nice day for a walk.

It might be, anyway, if you didn't have to take it on the edge of traffic.

Greg Hurry of Fort Wayne, who has been forced to walk in the street, says it feels dangerous sometimes.

" Yeah, because the cars will be coming and there's nowhere to go."

We stumbled onto Hurry as he was strolling down Bayer Avenue late morning, heading to his apartment complex.

It's common right now to see sidewalks submerged under mounds of snow.

There are no sidewalks on congested Coliseum Boulevard, but snow pushed to the side leaves little room on the burm, forcing pedestrians to walk barely a step or two away from fast moving cars and trucks.

16-year old North Side High School student Christian Thomas would tell you it's not easy to walk a mile in his shoes, or even to his neighborhood convenience store on Hobson Road, for that matter.

It's risky business tromping in traffic, and it doesn't do much for his brand new white sneakers.

" I know nobody likes going out and spending $65 to $100 every week for a new pair, so, you know, it is kind of a hassle to have to walk in the street for the snow, because you can't walk on the sidewalk," Thomas said.

We asked Greg Hurry if he’s considered staying in, because he doesn’t like walking in the street.

" Well, I have to go out and do my stuff, those things I have to do," Hurry said.

Temperatures will be above freezing most of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

But trading snow for slush and puddles doesn’t figure to be a walk in the park either.
