Fort Wayne, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - An overpopulation of pit bulls has a local non-profit reaching out to pet owners in the 46806 zip code in Fort Wayne.
The HOPE for Animals Snip-by-Zip program is offering neutering or spaying for $5.
Their bus will be at the Bait and Tackle on Lafayette at Oxford Street from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. It's first come first serve. This week they can take 12 dogs.
The pets will be returned to their owners, at the same location and same time, Monday. The goal is to decrease euthanasia of pit bulls.
"A lot of times they're choosing between feeding their family or feeding their dog. So being able to offer transportation and offer this program to them gives them a unique opportunity that they wouldn't otherwise have. By targeting these pit bulls we're going to be able to reduce the population and reduce the euthanasia of this breed of animal," said Katie Policinski, Public Outreach Coordinator, HOPE for Animals.
Snip-by-Zip is funded by a grant from PetSmart Charities. Sunday is the first time the organization is doing this.
HOPE for Animals will continue to do this every Sunday until they run out of funds. They anticipate being able to take 1,000 dogs in total.
