FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - While Friday’s shuttle launch marked the end of an era for NASA, as the shuttle program will no longer be operational after the Atlantis crew finishes its mission space.
You can still see and touch artifacts from past space missions at Science Central located in Fort Wayne.
Along with space suits and tiles, you can also see a tire that was once on the Columbia Shuttle.
Science Central Director Martin Fischer says, “The tire, also known as the main landing gear is pretty much the centerpiece of our exhibit. It is an actual space shuttle tire, it flew on a Columbia mission in the late 1990's and it's one that visitors can touch.”
Fisher says that it was complicated to get the artifacts to Science Central, but having items that were really in space makes the work worth it.
