FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) --- Making up for lost time.

A Fort Wayne boy, whose father has been half a world away, serving his country, gets the present he's been waiting for.

We’re talking about a sweet homecoming for dad and son.

The rendezvous on Friday was at 8-year old Landon Kelly's school.

He had no idea what was about to happen.

Landon, who is a third grader at Indian Village School, was brought down to the media center mid afternoon, not realizing that his dad, Army National Guard specialist Nathan Kelly, had slipped into the school to surprise him.

They clung to one another for several minutes after Nathan snuck up from behind, all the while other family members snapped off a few photos of the extended hug.

We asked Landon what he thought when he saw who had approached him.

" I was happy," he said.

Nathan Kelly, with a unit out of North Carolina, says there were rare opportunities to communicate with family back home on his 12-month tour of duty.

" We did Skype when the Internet would work. Other than that, it was either send a quick message, try to get to a computer lab, but where I was at in Afghanistan, they didn't have a computer lab, so, it was just rough," Kelly said.

Kelly says he was nervous as he snuck up on his son.

As for dad and son’s plans about what they’ll do to re-connect, they both agree they’ll figure it out as they go along.

Specialist Kelly is being transferred back to Indiana, allowing time to make those family bonds tight again.
