FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – The Fort Wayne Rescue Mission has spent more than a week preparing Thanksgiving meals for 3,000 people in the area.

The Rescue Mission’s annual Thanksgiving meal will have a full slate of items for area hungry to enjoy. The mission’s food services manager, Chris Richardson, says meal preps began Sunday, November 11 when they cooked the first of 200 turkeys.

“We’ll prepare food for 3,000 people. That will consist of corn, your basic mashed potatoes and gravy with stuffing, and we'll do turkey of course with Indiana sweet cream pie, pumpkin pie, cherry and apple."

Volunteers began filling the Rescue Mission basement Monday, November 12 after the first batch of turkeys was cooked to strip the turkeys of their bones. Various volunteers, like members of the Ivy Tech Student Nursing Organization, have been there for three hours each day to bone, gravy and freeze the batches.

“It’s quite an undertaking… Everyday from last Sunday, we will have done 25 turkeys everyday and then the next day they pull them,” Richardson says.

One of those volunteers is Theresa Saroukh, member of the student nursing organization, who made her second trip to the mission Tuesday. She calls the opportunity to help prepare the massive meal a blessing.

"We're a community and this is— I've been very blessed and this is my way for sharing a little bit of my blessing with other people in the community, and I feel very privileged to be here today."

Saroukh says volunteers take pride in their work and says volunteering can be done all year, not just around the holidays.

"I am very proud of my volunteer work here and with other organizations in town and definitely get involved."

The meal will be served Thursday 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. at the Rescue Mission free of charge.
