FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – The Fort Wayne Rescue Mission opened its doors to thousands of hungry in Fort Wayne for Thanksgiving.
The annual meal, which consists of 3,000 carry out and eat in meals this year, began at noon at The Rescue Mission.
Volunteers began prepping meals November 11 by breaking down more than 200 turkeys and 3,000 pounds worth of meat to go along with corn, rolls, pies, stuffing and other traditional Thanksgiving fixings.
Eddie Dunlap, a carry out customer who visits The Rescue Mission daily for a hot meal, says prayer and the mission can help anyone struggling in Fort Wayne.
“We can do nothing without the help of God and it’s just great to show that the mission is here for a lot of us and those that can’t get up today to come,” Dunlap says.
Dennis Mark Tracey, who also has been to The Rescue Mission in the past for help, enjoyed his Thanksgiving meal among friends in the mission’s dining hall.
“It’s a wonderful chance to get out and see a lot of my friends I've known through town and through the years and everything. It’s been a good place. I stayed here a couple times in transit,” he says.
Dozens of volunteers helped to make the Thanksgiving meal a reality for area hungry. In addition to serving in the dining room, volunteers also worked quickly to fill carry out boxes. One of those volunteers, Renea Peacock, says the initial rush of people inside the mission for a hot meal can be disheartening. She also says seeing them enjoy their meals is encouraging.
“It's actually saddening to start with and then it becomes a very happy thing because at least you know they're being fed,” Peacock says.
Tim Brunson and his wife have made going to the mission on Thanksgiving a tradition. After what Brunson described as a year that included setbacks for his family, he says being able to share his time on Thanksgiving is a blessing
“It is awesome. It’s just a great feeling. My wife and I are thankful so much this year and just to come down here and help other people is just great.”
