Propane Shortage Hitting Customers & Schools Hard

January 29, 2014 Updated Jan 29, 2014 at 3:35 PM EST

INDIANA (21Alive) -- If you use propane to heat your home, you are probably already aware of the shortage. In fact, if you are running low, trying to get someone to fill your tank is a nightmare and be prepared for sticker shock and possibly a delivery fee tacked on to the final price tag.

Stump Propane in Pierceton has notified customers that all deliveries are now cash on delivery, automatic deliveries will no longer be available, orders will be taken on a dollar amount only and pricing will be determined on the day of delivery.

And the shortage is impacting one Indiana school particularly hard. Lebanon's Perry-Worth Elementary is heated by propane and the tank is running low. It is down to 30% capacity, enough to keep the school running for only about three more weeks. The shortage across the country is making it tough to re-supply.
