WASHINGTON DC (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Even more Americans are living in poverty.

The Census Bureau says that about 1 in 7 people lived in poverty last year, that’s around 43.6 million Americans.

That's up from 39.8 million in 2008.

The new numbers released Thursday show the working-age poor have reached the highest level since at least 1965.

The number of people lacking health insurance also rose due mostly to the loss of employer-provided health insurance during the recession.
