Do you think Mike Pence would make a good governor?
INDIANA (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - A popular Indiana congressman confirms he wants to trade Washington for the governor's mansion.
6th District Congressman Mike Pence Thursday removed all doubt; he's running for governor in 2012.
The bigger surprise was in how Pence let everybody know of his intentions.
Normally, a politician in such a case books an airplane and flies around the state, announcing his future plans with big fanfare.
Instead, Pence released a two-minute "YouTube" video, revealing the launch of his gubernatorial campaign.
Around 10 a.m., Allen County GOP Chairman Steve Shine was one of about 400 people invited to listen in to a conference call, where Pence ended the poorly kept secret.
Pence hinted this is about finishing off a good work in progress, saying our state is on the edge of an unprecedented period of growth and opportunity.
Mike Pence/(R) IN Gubernatorial Candidate: " Under the capable leadership of Governor Mitch Daniels, Indiana has set the pace in fiscal responsibility, job creation and reform. But our work is not over. While a formal campaign kickoff will come later, I wanted you to be the first to know that I'm in this race. We think now is the time to move forward."
The Indiana Democratic Party responded with a written statement from its chairman Dan Parker, who said, in part, Pence is a proud partisan, “…and that's the kind of attitude that makes it impossible to get things done. A vitriolic critic with a megaphone does not a quality executive make, and he'd bring everything that's wrong with Washington back to Indiana."
Pence says his official campaign kickoff will come in his hometown of Columbus on June 11th.
