COLUMBUS, Ohio (www.incnow.tv) -- E. Gordon Gee, president of The Ohio State University, made comments back in December blasting Roman Catholic priests and the University of Notre Dame

The Associated Press obtained an audio tape through a Freedom of Information Act request, and made public the comments Gee to an OSU Athletics Council. Gee has already issued an apology, calling his comments a "poor attempt at humor".

According to the recording, Gee spoke criticized the University of Notre Dame for its unwilliningness to join the Big Ten Conference.

"The fathers are holy on Sunday, and they're holy hell on the rest of the week," Gee says. "You just can't trust those damn Catholics on a Thursday or a Friday."

Gee also criticized the University of Louisville and its academic standards.

"Make certain that we have institutions of like-minded academic integrity," Gee tells a laughing room. "You won't see us adding Louisville."

Gee, known for off-color comments, reportedly later apologized to Notre Dame president, Fr. John Jenkins. He also took to Twitter Thursday night to clear the air.

A Notre Dame spokesman says Gee's comments were unfortunate.

Ohio State says Gee is aware of his gaffe and is undergoing remediation for the situation

The Big Ten Conference also distanced itself from Gee's comments.

“The remarks made by Ohio State University President Gordon Gee were inappropriate and in no way represent the opinions of the conference,” Jim Delaney, Big Ten commissioner said in a statement. “We have great respect for the University of Notre Dame and the SEC, and we are proud of the rich, competitive history we share with each.”
