FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - You can be fined up to $2,500 if you don't shovel the snow from your sidewalks.

It's part of an ordinance that's been in effect since 1974.

Last year the city received 23 reports about snowy sidewalks.

But no one has ever gone to court for refusing to shovel snow.

Information Director for the city of Fort Wayne Frank Suarez says, “The Right of Way Department of the Public Works Division, which the right of way is charged with going out and making sure that the ordinances are being enforced. They follow up on complaints. They sometimes will find violations themselves and will issue letters of warning to the resident that they're in violation of a code or they will actually go out sometimes in some cases to businesses and knock on the door and say, you know what, this is in violation.”

People who aren't able to shovel their sidewalks should ask neighbors or relatives for help.
