CHURUBUSCO, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Students at Churubusco Jr. – Sr. High School received new netbooks for school on Wednesday.

The state granted Smith-Green Community Schools $200 thousand for the year, and $150 thousand of it went toward new technology.

All students, 5th-12th grades, will get netbooks, but only students 6th grade and up will be allowed to take them home. Parents and students are required to go through a 30-35 minute training and regulation session on their new Dell Netbooks. Students are given instructions on how to take care of the computer and will have their netbooks up and running before they leave the session.

Assistant Principal Andrew Deming said students are excited and love having the netbooks. Deming said the laptops will help prepare students for 21st century demands.

“When they walk through the doors, we don’t want them to lose all the technology they have. We don’t want them to lose the internet and the laptops and come in here and use paper and pencil. We just think that having the laptops in their hands all the time really pushes their 21st century skills and provides them with a great resource.”

Deming said the netbooks will not replace text books, but they will add to the curriculum and the dynamics between teachers and students.

“What we’re envisioning is each teacher has their own website. On there, they can put their daily assignments, they can put resources on there…let’s say rather than handing a kid a worksheet they can go to that website, download it on their computer, fill it out, type it in and send it right back to the teacher. We can almost go paperless after a couple years.”

Deming said Churubusco Jr.-Sr. High is one of a few schools in the area providing students with netbooks. Netbook distribution will go on Thursday and Friday from 9-11 a.m. and 5-7 p.m. at the school. The first day for Smith-Green Community Schools is August 17.
