New Haven Woman Killed In Crash In Ohio

VAN WERT, Ohio (21Alive) -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Van Wert Post is investigating a fatal crash that occurred at the intersection of US 127 and SR 81 in Liberty Township at approximately 7:45 a.m. Tuesday.

A 2002 Dodge Caravan and a 2007 Kenworth tractor trailer were traveling northbound on US127. The Caravan slowed down near the intersection of SR 81 and was struck from behind by the tractor trailer. Both vehicles came to final rest in the north and southbound lanes of US127.

The driver of the 2002 Dodge was 31-year-old Elizabeth Klug, a resident of New Haven Indiana. She was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash. Ms. Klug was pronounced dead at the scene by the Van Wert County Coroner.

The driver of the 2007 Kenworth was 45-year-old Douglas L. Bell, a resident of Maria Stein, Ohio. Mr. Bell was transported to Van Wert Regional Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released. It is unknown if Mr. Bell was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

US127 between the intersection of SR81 and Fox Rd remained closed during the investigation and clean up. All lanes of travel are currently open. The Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office and Ohio City FD and EMS.

The traffic crash is currently under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
