FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- The Allen County Coroner's Office has released the name of the gunman who was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with Fort Wayne Police Thursday.
The incident unfolded about 8:20 Thursday morning in the 7700 block of Weymouth Court, when police responded to a disturbance involving a man, now named as Ryan J. Koontz, 22, with a semi-automatic handgun inside a residence who was believed to be suicidal.
A video surfaced from Koontz's YouTube account where he was firing a weapon indiscriminately out of a car window.
Police say they have had previous contact with Koontz.
According to officials, Initial information indicated that a resident at the home was under the influence of a mind- or mood-altering drug(s), and he was behaving irrationally.
We're told police retreated from the house when Koontz produced the weapon. He then left the house and got into a car, attempting to flee. Officers say Koontz tried to run over them as he was fleeing, shooting at police, who returned fire, killing him.
In the exchange, bullets hit nearby homes. No police or other residents were hurt.
Police Chief Rusty York was immediately on the scene when the incident unfolded. The fatal police action shooting today was the second in a week involving city of Fort Wayne Police.
The Allen County Coroner's Office has pronounced this the 17th homicide for Fort Wayne and Allen County in 2013. A ruling of homicide by the Coroner means that a person died as the result of an act of another individual.
