FORT WAYNE, Ind. (NBC33) -- The Excellence in Education Award for August goes to Gene Guthrie from Blackhawk Christian School. Mr. Guthrie has been teaching first grade at Blackhawk for 24 years.

Teachers have one of the most important jobs out there, but often go without the recognition they truly deserve. That's why NBC is so proud to announce the Excellence in Education Award, highlighting exceptional teachers right here in our own community.

Each month, the winning teacher will get $500 to buy books from the Bookmark and a plaque to display from AMS Uniforms/Markfore. They'll also get a fantastic watch, courtesy of Bradley Gough Diamonds, valued at $500.

Mr. Guthrie was nominated by one of his student's mother, Gaie Burrows.

You can nominate a special teacher in your life by going to NBC33.com and clicking on the “contest" page.
