CANADA (21Alive) -- A mom was fined by the daycare where she takes her children after she failed to include grains in their packed lunches.
According to Yahoo News, Kristin Barkiw's two children attend Little Cubs Den daycare and she received a note from the daycare that she was being fined $5 per child because she failed to pack a lunch that included the nutritional requirements.
Barkiw packed her kids' lunches with leftover roast beef, carrots, potatoes, an orange and milk. The note said that the daycare had to provide Ritz crackers to fulfill the nutritional requirements of grains.
The note says that lunches must contain 1 milk, 1 meat, 1 grain and 2 fruits/vegetables and that according to licensing guidelines, the daycare is required to supplement lunches that contain anything less than that.
Yahoo News reports that the fines were put in place to keep parents from sending their children to daycare with only junk food. Barkiw was a part of the daycare's board when they adopted the fining policy. Barkiw got the fine rescinded when she explained that the starchy potatoes were included in place of a grain product.
