FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - Meth. It's been called the cheapest, dirtiest, and most powerful drug in existence today.

Nearly 1,400 meth labs were busted across Indiana in 2010.

"We've had calls about it... It's been reported to us. It's not as much as our officers actually going out and tracking stuff down as much," said Kosciusko County Sheriff Department Sergeant Chad Hill.

According to the Indiana State Police, Vanderburgh County in Southwest Indiana lead Indiana with 95 meth labs busted in 2010.

Kosciusko was 2nd, with 85.

Noble was 3rd, with 74.

Dekalb was 10th, with 35.

Allen County was not ranked in the top ten, but had 22 busts.

Wells and Adams counties did not have any meth labs busted in 2010.

Meanwhile, one of the key ingredients in meth is Sudafed.

Some states have made it a prescription drug, drastically lowering the number of active meth labs in their states.

Indiana lawmakers are considering passing a similar law at the statehouse.

However, many parts of Indiana are within an hour of neighboring states like Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and Kentucky.

Officers think those states should have similar laws so Indiana's law is more effective.

Hill explains that Kosciusko numbers are up because of community engagement.

"A lot more people are reporting in our county. We obviously have a major problem or we wouldn't be highly ranked but I think some of the counties that are surrounding are very high as well... It's more of a response approach to get that high of a number," said Sgt. Hill.

According to the Indiana State Police, 270 children were found in homes with meth labs in 2010.

Hill said a lot of those children have no idea what type of fumes they are breathing in, when they live at homes containing meth labs.
