FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) --- Hoosier businesses tell a high-profile employment agency that hiring should overshadow layoffs in the first quarter of 2013.
It's welcome news for one area woman, who has resorted to extreme measures to try and land a job.
On Christmas Eve, we told you about Natalie Zehr's frustrating journey since being laid off in March.
She was beginning to despair, but a friend crafted a sign for the Huntertown area woman, that reads, “Marketing Professional For Hire.”
She decided to take the sign and pound the pavement in search of a paycheck.
Natalie donned a hat and gloves at Coldwater and Coliseum Boulevard with sign in hand around 8 a.m. Wednesday, showing just how committed she really is to finding work.
" It's been kind of cold, a little windy. The sign has been a little difficult to hold on to, but I've got a couple leads this morning already,” said Zehr.
“ One person pulled in the parking lot and gave me a lead on a management position, kind of up the road here a little bit, and another woman kind of called me over while she was waiting at a stop light. We've gotten some hoots and hollers, so we just wave and smile."
Her friend Carrie Baker bundled up too, to provide moral support.
" I think it's great. That's exactly what she was hoping for," said Baker, who kept Zehr’s coffee warm in the frigid conditions.
Natalie has company in the job-searching arena right now.
We talked to Manpower Incorporated, a well-known employment agency, about what the job prospects are for early 2013.
Joel Daas says in his company's latest employment survey, 9 percent of Indiana businesses expected to cut staff, but 16 percent figured to add people in the first quarter.
Daas acknowledges applicants will turn their nose up at some lower-paying positions and he says employers will also feel stress trying to fill openings requiring higher skill sets.
" So, machine operation, welding, I-T, those types of positions, there's a high demand for those positions, and you can pick and choose where you'd want to go pretty much," said Daas.
Natalie Zehr would choose somewhere other than the snow and cold to audition for a job.
But she's hoping that a potential boss will take notice of how serious she is about returning to a company’s payroll before her unemployment benefits run out at the end of the month.
