FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – A confessed killer has been sentenced to 40-years in prison.

A week before his trial was set to begin, 35-year-old Thomas Manjarez pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, admitting he fatally shot the mother of his children, 33-year-old Carmen Ramos, twice in the back after an arguement.

Ramos' body was found in her home on Huestis Avenue in April of 2010. Manjarez fled to Texas, but was arrested during a routine traffic stop earlier this year.

Court reports indicate that Manjarez has a lengthy criminal past and a history of domestic abuse against Ramos.

Under the plea agreement, a murder charge was dismissed. Ten years of his 50 year sentence were suspended and will be served on probation. He could be released from jail in 20 years with good behavior.
