FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- A man is dead after police say he drove his car across the median, 2 lanes of traffic, and into a pond.

A Huntertown volunteer fireman was the first to the scene at the 14300 block of Lima Road just after midnight Thursday morning.

He told 21Alive that he quickly entered the water, broke the glass, and attempted to get the man out.

In the meantime, other crews arrived on scene and assisted the firefighter.

Elijah Tanner, 32, of Fort Wayne, was to a hospital in critical condition, but he later died.

His cause and manner of death are pending.

Police do not know what may have caused the van to leave the roadway.
