FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) – It's become a highlight to the Hotel Fitness Championship week. It’s also a charitable event that has done a lot for the community in its 57 years – it's the Mad Anthonys Red Coat Dinner.
The dinner was held at the Hotel Fort Wayne Tuesday night. The red coat is an honor given to deserving individuals who've had a significant influence on Fort Wayne and the State.
This year's recipients are Governor Mike Pence and Tom Kelley who were presented their coats by Hotel Fitness President Bruce Dye.
Gov. Pence also presented Bruce Dye with the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest possible honor to be given to a citizen.
Kelley, who owns Kelley Automotive Group, says he's humbled to receive such an honor.
“My dad just raised me, ‘we live in this community so lets do everything we can to make it better’, whether it's our work with The Boys and Girls Club, whatever it may be, you just try to make Fort Wayne a better place for everyone, and I guess some people think that that might deserve a Red Coat,” said Kelley.
The red coat dinner also raises money for the Mad Anthonys Children’s Hope House, which provides temporary housing for families whose children are in Lutheran Hospital long term. Thanks to the contributions from the red coat dinner, the Mad Anthonys children’s Hope House has doubled in size, and no one is left on the waiting list.
