FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- On this national holiday, people across the country and here in Fort Wayne celebrated the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The day kicked off with the fifth annual breakfast with the clergy at a downtown hotel.

The Martin Luther King club of Fort Wayne hosted the 28th annal Unity Day Celebration at the Grand Wayne Center, featuring speakers, dozens of vendors and free health screenings.

The theme of the day was to celebrate the life, the dream and the legacy of Dr. King.

And like millions of Americans on the holiday, students from the University of St. Francis proved how this is a "day on, not a day off."

It's a movement to show respect for Dr. King, and make the day about serving others -- as he preached -- not just taking a day off work or school.

Some of the students sorted and packed non-perishable items at the Aassociated Churches food bank to be delivered to 29 food pantries across the county.

It comes when demand for emergency food is at its highest through the entire recession.

"This is a day that we remember those who do not have what most of us do have. And that his legacy is that we serve, in a peaceful way, without violence. And so this is our way of doing that," says Rebecca Coleman from the University of St. Francis.

St. Francis students also sorted clothes at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store on South Calhoun.

All the proceeds from the store go to help evaluate families in their homes for their needs, as well as provide transportation to medical appointments.
