FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- The vote tabulation process could have a tremendous cost for U.S. Senator Richard Lugar, who, by most accounts, is now trailing challenger Richard Mourdock in the Republican Primary.

It is the race that should grab headlines in Indiana on Tuesday.

Indeed, if Lugar loses, it could be one of the biggest stories of the 2012 election season nationwide.

A major poll released last week had Lugar down ten points to State Treasurer Richard Mourdock.

Lugar has been a mainstay in the senate since 1977.

In Fort Wayne the day before the primary election, we asked voters which candidate they support and why.

" Richard Mourdock, because I think he's a true conservative. He has not been there in Washington, and I think Lugar has been there long enough,” said Bruce Graham, a Mourdock backer.

“ I voted for Senator Lugar. I think his past history, what he has done, is good. I think he's still very able,” said Janice Young, who wants to give Lugar another six years.

" I'm supporting Richard Mourdock. I'm for term limits. I think, just in general principle, it's time to get somebody new in there," said Tina Gambrell, who is solidly in the Mourdock column.

" Sometimes it's better to go for the guy that you already know, than the other guy that you don't even know," said Jesus Requena, who is leaning towards voting for the 80-year old Lugar.

Mourdock has caught flak from Lugar supporters, who say he got illegal homestead deduction tax breaks.

They also generally question his experience and fitness to handle the demands of a job on Capitol Hill.

The Mourdock campaign has fired back, saying Lugar is too moderate for the good of Indiana.

They cite Lugar’s support of President Obama’s Supreme Court nominees as one example of why change is warranted.

The winner of the May 8th Republican Primary will take on Democrat Congressman Joe Donnelly in the November election for a seat in the U.S. Senate
