FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- Imagine being a health insurance agent and getting a letter that your own coverage will no longer exist.
Dennis Williamson is like millions of other Americans finding letters in the mail saying their private health insurance policies will be cancelled.
"What my policy does not have of the 10 items that must be in there is maternity coverage. And my wife and I being 60-plus years old, that's no concern to us,” Williamson says.
Williamson has sold health and other insurance for 38 years, so he knows the industry.
But his letter from Anthem Blue Cross - Blue Shield said because his current policy doesn't meet all the minimum Obamacare provisions, it will no longer be available.
"It's being told to us that this plan now is substandard. It's no good. I don't have a good plan, and I shouldn't have to keep it. The insurance companies are getting rid of substandard care, which is not the case in ours. We love this policy that we're on, but the Affordable Care Act says we can't have it any more," Williamson says.
To have a comparable health care plan, his out of pocket would be more, as would the deductible.
The best premium he's seeing right now is about 20% higher than he's paying. So he is beyond frustrated.
"You're losing a plan that you're perfectly happy with, to buy one that's more expensive and doesn't give you exactly what you want. Correct. Exactly. That doesn't make much sense. It doesn't make sense. That's not what we were told was going to happen. I've heard our president say 'If you like the plan you have, you can keep it. Period.' That's pretty emphatic,” Williamson says.
Chances are, he is not going to get what he wants.
"I think we ought to be able to keep the plans we have if we like 'em. And not have benefits put on us that we don't need,” Williamson says.
Williamson's health insurance provider offered him another year on the policy he loves, but at a higher cost. And at the end of next year, the policy will no longer exist. You just have to shop around.
